FOODYou won't go hungry in Bacalar. Quite a few of the restaurants can be found described on the BacalarMosaico. But there are many more little places that you will want to try if you have time. Don't miss the salbute and panucho stands at the market and on "tricyclos" around town. If you are looking for tacos and are out and about after 7pm try Christian's. It is on 7th towards the south end. You will recognize it by the potted plants out front near the tables. Across from the town park there is a new quesadilla stand that offers a wide variety of selections at a very fair price. They also have meals. It is worth checking out. They are one of the few places in town open for lunch.
If you are wondering, a salbute is a small tortilla fried and usually topped with shredded chicken, tomato, cabbage or lettuce, the wonderful yucatan red grilled onions, avocado, salsa and a little crema. A panucho is similar but has beans in the puff of the fried tortilla. Of course they vary from vendor to vendor but are usually delicious. There are several fresh juice stands that that offer a variety of fresh-squeezed or blended drinks. You might try the healthful chaya (like a spinach) and fresh orange juice blend. There is one on 7th just south of Chepe's. Fruteria Bacalar is just a bit further south and offers nice fresh produce and fruits as well as dry and canned goods.
If you have a kitchen and are looking for groceries, you will have many options. There are lots of small tiendas around town. You can't miss them. You may have to go to several to find what you want but most likely one will have what you need. There are many small "table-top" vendors as well as larger stalls in Bacalar's Market. It is best to go early (before 8) but some stores stay open all day. You will find it on 9th Ave, two blocks towards the lake from the Handall Pemex (the southern-most Pemex.)
Elsewhere in the Costa Maya, for example in Xcalak and Mahahaul, be prepared for delicious fresh sea food meals. There is nothing quite like sitting next to the water, under a palapa, gazing at the blues of the Carribian, eating fresh shrimp or fish tacos and drinking a cold beer.
